Promoting Biodiversity at our Site

Glögglifrosch

In 2018, a pond was created on our property to expand the habitat of the midwife toad (Alytes obstetricans). This native species of toad prefers the warm and humid environment of ponds for reproduction. To keep the populations in contact, the ponds should not be too far apart. To protect them from predators, we have dry stone walls. The males carry the eggs on their hind legs until the tadpoles hatch, which earned them the name "midwife toad." Instead of croaking, they produce a pleasant, bell-like sound and are therefore colloquially called "bell frogs".
